Mataró

Description

Mataró is full of corners to discover at any time of the year. Shops, colors, smells, heritage, culture and natural surroundings will surprise you.

The capital of Maresme has more than 129,000 inhabitants and enjoys a privileged location, located between the sea and the Serralada Litoral, 30 minutes from Barcelona and one hour from Girona.

A walk through the heart of the city allows you to get to know a space with a wide gastronomic offer for all tastes and with a quality and diverse commercial offer, which also includes the traditional markets where local farmers sell their products, identified with the Collits a Casa brand. This offer combines an attractive and pleasant environment where you can be surprised by samples of the city's rich heritage: the Roman legacy of the ancient city of Iluro, the beauty of the Baroque ensemble of the Capella dels Dolors in the Basilica of Santa Maria or the Nau Gaudí, the first work of the modernist architect Antoni Gaudí and currently home to the Museum of Contemporary Art where the Bassat Collection is exhibited, are some examples.

On the sea side, the beaches distinguished with the Q certifications of tourist quality and with all the services, invite you to spend a good time swimming in the summer and enjoy quiet walks in the winter. The gastronomic and leisure offer on the seafront is complemented by that of the Port de Mataró, a marina with more than a thousand moorings that offers nautical and underwater activities throughout the year and a
friendly space where you can enjoy alfresco evenings such as those at the music festival Posidònia Fest, at the beginning of September.

But if you are passionate about the mountains, close to the city, you will find a network of paths where you can walk and make excursions, on foot or by bike, that connect to the Parc del Montnegre i el Corredor and, for the more adventurous, dare to let the adrenaline run by jumping from tree to tree in the Bosc Vertical, in Parc Forestal!

Mataró is also festival and a tradition. Throughout the year there are festive celebrations or activities related to the dates indicated on the calendar. Carnivals, Holy Week, Sant Jordi, Christmas... but when the city really vibrates is in the last week of July with Les Santes, the city's main festival, which has been recognized as a Heritage Festival of National Interest. These are days of giants, gunpowder, fire, music, theatre, children's shows and much more. More than a hundred events combine tradition and popular culture with current arts and their protagonists.
