July 25, is a special day as we celebrate the day of Saint James, and what better way to commemorate it than by discovering the Via Marina on Saint James' Way as it passes from the Maresme? This pilgrimage route is a unique opportunity to explore our region. Join us on this journey and discover the stages and the points where you can get your pilgrim passport stamped.
Stages
This is the first coastal stage of the Via Marina. The 29 km route connects the region of La Selva with that of Maresme through the coastal municipalities of Lloret de Mar, Blanes, Malgrat de Mar, Santa Susanna, Pineda de Mar, Calella and Sant Pol de Mar.
You will be captivated by the beauty of the coastline of the southern Costa Brava between Lloret de Mar and Blanes, and the birdlife in the Tordera Delta, the agricultural areas and the Maresme coast. During this stage you will be on the pilgrimage along the promenades of the towns in the Maresme and you will be able to visit vestiges of this Jacobean past such as the Calella hospital and the church of Sant Pol de Mar.
The church of Sant Jaume (Saint James) in Sant Pol de Mar connects with the Basilica of Santa Maria in Mataró by means of a fourth stage of 23 km that passes through the municipalities of Canet de Mar, Arenys de Mar, Caldes d'Estrac, Sant Vicenç de Montalt and Sant Andreu de Llavaneres before arriving in Mataró.
In Canet de Mar you will see the Santuari de la Mare de Déu de la Misericòrdia, a hermitage dedicated to the patron saint of the Maresme. Once you arrive in Mataró you can enjoy the legacy of the ancient city of Iluro (public baths, cellar, wall...) as well as other vestiges dedicated to the Apostle Saint James.
This is the flattest stage of the Via Marina. It connects the capital of the region of the Maresme with the region of Barcelona by means of a 25 km route that crosses the county from north-east to south-west following the Maresme coast .
The itinerary will guide you, as a pilgrim, for a good part of the promenades of the Baix Maresme (Mataró, Cabrera de Mar, Vilassar de Mar, Premià de Mar, El Masnou and Montgat) and the Barcelona region (Badalona and Sant Adrià de Besòs) where you can enjoy the ecclesiastical and architectural heritage.
Stamping points
During the route, you will find several points where you can get a stamp in your pilgrim passport . Each stage has points where you can get a stamp such as tourist offices, cultural facilities and tourism companies that will provide you with the commemorative stamp of the municipality. These stamps are tangible proof of your pilgrimage and will be the most precious memory of this experience.
In conclusion, the Via Marina of Saint James' Way, as it passes through the Maresme, is an experience that combines hiking with history and culture. This pilgrimage route is an invitation to explore the Maresme area in a different way, as you delve into the past.
