A bike route for a family day out along the Tordera river

The Tordera is a river with its source in the Montseny and it passes through the districts of Vallès Oriental, Osona, Selva and Maresme. Along its 61.5 kms, you can hike or bike along what is known as the Tourdera route. Between Malgrat de Mar and Blanes you will find several observatories at the mouth of the river where you can observe the fauna, especially the birds.

The drop in temperature invites you to get on your bikes and go cycling. Today we invite you to retrace the Tordera river. Tordera is the town through which the river reaches the Maresme, so our route starts here.

Pedalling by the river

The route starts in front of the Ferro Bridge, where you can see the route panel and a banner. Most of the 6.8 kms runs along the Tordera river path in the direction of Palafolls.  You gain just 11 meters in height, making it an ideal excursion to spend a day with the family, and it is approved by Maresme's grandma!

This section passes through the Puigverd industrial estate and then through a forest where you can have a rest, and very close to the Palafolls airfield. You will be able to see the planes take off and land!

The first stop is the town of Palafolls, where you can visit the castell de Palafolls, which is 1.4 kms away. Of course, you need to be in good physical shape, as there is a bit more of a climb to get there by pedalling. But the views are worth it!

After you have had a rest, set off on a new stretch, this time from Palafolls to Malgrat de Mar, about 7 kms. The starting point is the intersection between Avinguda Pau Casals and Avinguda de la Ribera de la Burgada, where the route panel is located. This part is flatter, so it is ideal for the whole family.

Palauet

The route passes through Palauet and the library, two unique buildings designed by prestigious architects that you will surely like. The library takes its name from its designer, Enric Miralles, who conceived it as a partly underground open space covered with vaults. The Japanese architect Arata Isozaki designed the Palauet, a pavilion with a very striking wavy roof and a completely round shape. It is one of the most striking buildings in the Maresme!

Mouth of the Tordera and bird watching

We retrace the Tourdera route and before turning to go to our destination, Malgrat de Mar, continue straight to reach the mouth of the Tordera, where we will find an excellent observation point called Aguait de la Llacuna. It is a unique natural space where we can observe a large number of species, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles. Also the area where the river meets the Mediterranean Sea is an unusual sight. We recommend bringing binoculars to be able to see the animals from the observatory. And, above all, you must avoid chatting so as not to scare them. Shhh!
At this point you won't need your swimsuit: because the area is protected by the diversity of species of fauna and flora, so you won't be able to swim. But after a day with the family doing sport cycling and enjoying nature, it's time to go to Malgrat to finish the route. And if you're hot, here you can cool off on the beach!
You have passed through the two sections of the Tourdera that pass through the Maresme. You have seen the native species and some of the most unique architecture in the area. A very complete day!
The route can also be done on foot. There is a hiking trail that you can find on the Wikiloc profile of the Costa del Maresme Tourist Board website. There are over a hundred routes you can do once you've done the Tourdera!
