Casa Museu Domènech i Montaner

The Lluís Domènech i Montaner House-Museum is a museum ensemble that includes the Masia Rocosa farmhouse, from the seventeenth century, and the Domènech house, built between 1918 and 1919 by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, his son Pere Domènech and his son-in-law, Francesc Guardia.

The whole complex was inaugurated as a museum in 1991, after meticulous restoration work was carried out.

Lluís Domènech i Montaner was born in 1850 in Barcelona, city where, together with Canet de Mar, he would develop a large part of his architectural, intellectual and political trajectory. His ties with Canet de Mar stem from his mother, Maria Montaner, who was the daughter of Casa Forta, and from his wife, Maria Roura, who was born in this town in the Maresme as well.

The House-Museum acquaints visitors with the house in Canet de Mar where the architect stayed for long periods in the town, especially during the summer. In his office in the Masia Rocosa he designed such well-known buildings as the Cafè Restaurant and the Hotel Internacional of the Universal Exposition of 1888, the Palau de la Música Catalana, the Hospital de Sant Pau and the University of Comillas, among others. It should be noted that he constructed various buildings in Canet de Mar, aside from his own residence. On Riera Sant Domènec we can see the Athenaeum and Casa Roura, while in the woods of Pedracastell mountain stands Santa Florentina Castle.

Of added interest is the fact that Domènech i Montaner always requested copies of the works from his collaborators. Thus, one finds, for example, the decoration of Barcelona's Fonda Espanya in his studio, the plaster models of the University of Comillas and the presence of curious ceramic pieces throughout the house. Aside from its architectural aspect, the house-museum also reflects other spheres of interest of Domènech i Montaner, and especially his political and publishing activity. Lluís Domènech i Montaner was one of the driving forces behind political Catalanism and here we find a large part of his correspondence and his studies on Catalan heraldics. In the field of printing, the architect designed and directed works of great magnitude, such as the Enciclopedia General del Arte (General Encyclopedia of Art).

The House-Museum shares the counter at the entrance with the Tourist and Information Office.
