Modernism in the Maresme Region
Modernism is a cultural movement that took place between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century in Europe and which extended to all the manifestations of art, but whose greatest expression was in architecture and the plastic arts. In the Maresme region, this artistic movement acquired a special personality that has survived to the present day and can be appreciated in several towns.
Artists such as Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Ferrés i Puig, Cabanyes, and Mas i Morell are some of the architects born in or connected to the Maresme who designed some of the best-known modernist buildings in the region.
Modernist routes
The towns and cities most intrinsically linked to Modernism organise specialised routes to discover the emblems of the movement, such as the modernist route in Canet de Mar, where visitors can explore the Lluís Domènech i Montaner House-Museum, among others, and where they can also learn about the work of master glassmakers.
In Mataró and Argentona visitors can admire the buildings designed by Puig i Cadafalch and, in Mataró, Antoni Gaudí's very first work, the Nau Gaudí. In El Masnou visitors will find the legacy of a whole series of architects and master builders, such as Bonaventura Bassegoda i Amigó. In Sant Andreu de Llavaneres, the route takes visitors to discover buildings by architects such as Eduard Mercader and Joaquim Lloret, among others.
Modernist buildings
All over the Maresme region one can find factories, schools, towers, pantheons, chapels, athenaeums, town halls, streets, houses, etc., a whole host of representations of a cultural, artistic, architectural, and social movement that took root in the region.
